Coronavirus & the Cross

Chances are you've probably been thinking the world is coming to an end. Entire countries have been quarantined, global markets are crashing, water & hand santizier are flying off store shelves while the number of people infected with the new coronavirus increases daily.

This real and urgent threat we're currently facing in COVID-19 should not be taken lightly. Wash your hands. Stay home when sick. But should we really buy in to all the fear? There is reason to be afraid and greater reasons not to be.

A Changed Perspective

In the dark and difficult seasons of life we all wrestle with doubt. It's easy to jump to the conclusion that God has abandoned us. We think God created all things then took a giant step back to just watch life play out. But that's not the God of the Bible. We believe God is always in our business. He's actively involved with the everyday workings of life. God puts kings & rulers in their place. He sends both joy & sorrow.

Let me say that again: God sends both joy & sorrow. While that sounds terrible, it's actually pretty great if you think about it.

God sees all things as one who is outside of time. While we are limited to past, present, and future, God isn't. He's sovereignly leading in ways that are for His glory and our good that we can't see. We are weak, insignificant, little specs of dust, but we've been adopted as sons & daughters by the most powerful being in the universe. We may be small, but we deeply matter to the heart of God.

Remember the Cross

We can be confident in knowing that God is for us (not against us), and that He sends both joy & sorrow for our good like a loving Father. But with all that said, what do we make of this new coronavirus outbreak?

COVID-19 is yet another timely reminder that we live in a fallen world of sickness, suffering, sin, and death. None of us can outrun any of these things. But that's why the gospel is such good news. God hasn't abandoned us to figure this all out on our own. He has come in the person of Jesus. Jesus lived a sinless life, died on the cross to pay the price of sin, and rose from the grave claiming victory over sin & death.

In Jesus we never have to fear sickness or death, because He has overcome! The trial we face in COVID-19 has not frightened Jesus. He's still seated at the right hand of God the Father, ruling as King.

"I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." -John 16:33
